Cerebrovascular diseases STROKE
Every minute that passes without a stroke being treated is the equivalent of the loss of around 2 million brain cells due to cell death. If left untreated, that is basically the equivalent of 36 years of normal brain aging. Therefore, it comes at a great cost in terms of the patient’s function and ability to return to a normal way of life.
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious long-term disability among adults. But the doctors and health professionals at the Neurological Center of Centro Médico ABC work in a comprehensive way for the care of patients. We have international accreditation by JCI for the care of STROKE patients.
Stroke is a treatable, time-dependent disorder. The sooner we intervene, the more likely the individual will have a good outcome.
What is a cerebrovascular disease – STROKE?
Cerebral vascular disease (CVD) refers to all those cerebral alterations of vascular origin. Its acute manifestation is known by the term STROKE
from Latin it means “blow”
because it is usually sudden. The term STROKE joins the cerebrovascular nature with the connotation of the acute character of the episode.
In general terms, the STROKE is divided into two large groups according to its production mechanism:
- Ischemic stroke It is produced by occlusion of an artery, which prevents blood from irrigating an area of the brain. When this happens, the affected area lacks oxygen and nutrients, and the cells suffer an ischemic injury. The occlusion may be due to a local thrombus, a remote clot lodged in the cerebral circulation, or diseases of the cerebral vasculature.
- Hemorrhagic stroke: In this case, the rupture of an artery produces hemorrhage that in turn conditions brain injury or compression. The hemorrhage can be intracerebral or on the surface of the brain (subdural or subarachnoid space). In the first case, the cause is usually associated with hypertension and, less frequently, by malformations in the vessels; in the latter, the cause is more often a head injury or a dilated artery (aneurysm).
Stroke represents one of the top ten causes of death worldwide in developed countries according to WHO according to the results obtained in 2016 with a 15-year trend. In Mexico it is the fourth cause of death, representing the third cause in subjects over 65 years of age and has an incidence of 118 per 100,000 inhabitants per year, a prevalence of 8 per 1000 inhabitants and mortality of 38.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. In addition, the first cause of disability in adults and the second cause of dementia. It is estimated that 20% of survivors require special care for 3 months after the event and almost 30% remain in a permanent serious disability.

At Centro Médico ABC we have worked to be able to give timely treatment to patients with STROKE, effectively treating the damaged artery in the shortest possible time, 50% of our patients have been treated in less than 45 minutes, exceeding the international standard of 60 minutes, goal established in the international guide: 2018 Guidelines for Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke from the American Heart Association, which is why we have been accredited by JCI. In addition, we are the first medical center in Mexico to obtain the JCI certification as “Primary Stroke Centers”. - JCI Certification
This accreditation joins that of the Mexican Association of Cerebral Vascular Disease (AMEVASC, for its Spanish acronym). Both accreditations ensure that the patient will obtain timely care, generating a lower neurological deficit and, which, in addition, reduces costs and hospital stay, at the same time increasing their quality of life by having fewer aftereffects. - Multidisciplinary team
To do this, Centro Médico ABC works with a multidisciplinary team where emergency physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurolinguists, and physical therapists that in a timely and rapid manner meet the patient’s needs to help reduce the consequences of stroke.

patients and relatives
We seek to inform patients and their families about the condition, enhance the patient’s capacity and skills for self-care, avoid social isolation, contribute to the acceptance of limitations and adverse effects, transcend the condition and establish networks of friendship and identity:
- STROKE: With a sensitive and considerate treatment we ensure the care of your health and we provide you with the necessary elements to improve your physical and emotional capacity through learning and the exchange of experiences.
- Head injury: Each session lasts two hours; in the first hour, a specialist addresses a topic of interest related to the condition, and in the second hour, the participants share their experiences.
