What is Osteoarthritis?

16:17 - 22 May , 2021

Disease

It is a highly frequent chronic degenerative disease since it is a very common type of arthritis. It causes a progressive wear in the cartilage of various bones, producing severe damage in multiple joints such as the knee, spine, hands, elbows, and hips.

Potential causes and risks:

If the wear of the cartilage that prevents friction in joint movement does not stop, the bone will rub directly with other bone, causing intense pain and inflammation of the joint.

Potential risks of osteoarthritis increase with age and gender, it is more likely to suffer from it if you are older and a woman.

Other factors are being overweight, family history, and some metabolic diseases.

Signos y síntomas Osteoarthritis

  • Inflammation.
  • Stiffness.
  • Intense pain.
  • Bone malformations.
  • Squeaks when moving the joints.

These symptoms can be controlled to some extent, but joint damage is irreversible. It is recommended to exercise and stay at your ideal weight to help slow down the disease and its consequences.

Diagnosis and treatment Osteoarthritis

Your doctor will perform a physical examination of the affected joints to determine the degree of inflammation, stiffness, and pain, in addition to ordering imaging studies such as MRI and X-rays to identify the level of progress of the disease and the joint condition.

In addition to pain killers and anti-inflammatories, your doctor will recommend physical and occupational therapy sessions to teach you new ways to move in your daily activities, so you don’t put too much stress on your joints.

In very advanced cases, you may be prescribed surgical treatments such as joint replacement or bone realignment.
